Traverse City - Skydiving edition

"Talking to Destinee has kind of sold me on skydiving," my friend Andrea said.

"Me too! Do you want to go the day before school starts?" I asked.

"Ask me tomorrow," Andrea said.

The next day, she texted me..."I'm IN for skydiving!"

That was on August 4, and we were skydiving on August 25. I made an appointment to sign our will and thought about it almost every day. I told a few people - but not my parents. I knew my mom especially would worry.

~

Andrea and I met at Skydive TC - Traverse City. Kris and the boys dropped me off. I told them I loved them and have a good school year if I didn't make it. Ty and Cole just laughed me off, and Max said, "Would you please stop saying that?" Andrea said she told her husband Chris but not her daughter Sam - also because she thought she'd worry.

The pilot introduced himself as Tyler. The guy jumping with me was Max. I expected the next guy to be Cole or Colton or similar, but they were Brad and Eric.

There wasn't an orientation or a formal training or making us watch a video (as I feared there would be.) Max just said, "Step into this harness." As he helped me put it on, he conversationally said that when he tapped my shoulder, that meant he was going to pull the parachute.

"Is there anything I can do to screw this up?" I asked.

"Don't pull on the emergency chute," he said.

"Has anyone ever done that?" I asked.

"No, but sometimes people just start freaking out and trying to grab at anything," he said.

Hmm.

~

We quickly got onto the plane, which had only a seat for the pilot, and the rest was just a floor. We had to sit in front of the people we were jumping with, and they attached our harness to theirs.

"Do you promise everything will be okay and we'll make it to the ground?" I asked Max.

"I promise," he said. (Before any procedure, I elicit this same promise from anesthesiologists, surgeons, dentists - you can't break a promise!)

Neither Andrea nor I realized this, but the flight was really long - 25 minutes. We talked to the guys, we looked at the gorgeous views of the blue water. You could see different shades of blue delineated, and it was just so pretty. Max pointed out different places - Marble Bay, Elk Lake, Traverse City itself. We learned that Max had jumped 4,000 times, Brad had jumped 6,000 times, and Eric was on his 40th jump.

I was really nervous.

"My heart rate is 120," I said to Andrea.

"Mine is 90 - that's the same as when I watch Sam play basketball," she said.

If I talked and kept my mind off it, I was less nervous. I mean, I knew I was going to jump out of an airplane. Of course I was nervous.

"Why are they all wearing helmets and we're not?" I quietly asked Andrea.

"That's a good question," she said.

We contemplated this.

"Two minutes," the pilot told us.

Eric, who was jumping solo, rolled up the door and secured it with velcro. He hung his legs over the edge and was gone in one second.

Andrea and Brad scooted up and poof - gone.

Max and I scooted up, and I put my legs out the window. The wind was so incredibly strong I thought my shoes might blow off.

We waited there a few seconds and....we fell.

My sister said that skydiving is just like floating, because you aren't passing anything and you don't feel like you're falling.

I felt exactly like I was falling.

The wind was incredible. I was concentrating very hard on what I was seeing - the ground coming toward me. I thought about where my arms were. I thought about doing it right. I thought about the sensation of falling. AND THE WIND.

Then, I thought, he must have already pulled the parachute. There is no way you can fall this long. It seems impossible. We have been falling forever.

Then he tapped my shoulder, and BAM - as he pulled the parachute, we stopped. It felt a little like a car crash. I later had bruises in my armpits and around my legs from the harness. (I later read you go from 120 mph to 17 mph abruptly.)

I felt a real sense of relief. The parachute worked! We were totally going to make it!

He asked me if I got motion sick (which he had asked a few times) and I said no. So he asked if I wanted to fly the parachute. He handed me the two handles and showed me how we could spin in different directions, then let them up to be weightless for a second. We did that a few times. We looked at Andrea and Eric. We looked at the airstrip. It was a long float down!

"I'm just so happy," I said. "We made it."

"Well, we haven't landed yet," he joked(?)

He maneuvered and pointed us toward the airstrip. I held my legs up, and he stepped down first and then I did. It was actually graceful!

Andrea had landed right in front of me, and we ran and hugged and jumped up and down. We did it! And it was fun and scary at the same time!

We rode the van back to where we started, and I talked to Eric the owner about his business. He used to be a teacher, and then he started a flight school and now the skydiving school. All of his employees are also in pilot training. He was a nice guy.

We got back and they showed us each the video they made of us. Max told me we were freefalling for 40 seconds! It was funny to watch myself doing it, because I had a clear view of what I'd seen from my eyes, and this wasn't it - this was me looking like I falling and studying for a test! Andrea's was fun to see, because her expression was pure joy.

Eric offered us a t-shirt when we bought the video. I said I wasn't going to get a video, and he said we could have shirts anyway because we were nice people. Yay!

~

Andrea and I talked about it the whole three hour drive home. When we got to my house, my mom was here, and Andrea and I greeted her in our matching shirts.

"Guess what we did today!" I said.

"Did you run a race?" she said, looking at our matching shirts.

"No! We went skydiving!" I said.

"You did?!" she said, obviously surprised. "...Whose idea was that?"

"Carla's," Andrea said.

"Andrea's," I said.

~

Skydiving is very fun, and very scary, and I give Skydive TC high marks for making it fun and seem routine. I highly recommend it to other people, and I would totally go again as long as the tandem jumper promises it will be fine!

Traverse City for New Year's Eve

I make a huge deal about New Year's Eve, and my goal is to spend each one in a different place. It got really difficult traveling over the holidays in the last few years, and I don't like leaving my kids during Christmas break, so now we're going to different places closer to home. This year, I searched for ball drops in Michigan, and came up with Traverse City! Home of the Cherry Festival, they have a cherry drop. Sounded like fun to me! My brother and his family, plus other friends wanted to get together for NYE too.

Airbnb

Airbnbs on Lake Michigan in the winter are very reasonable, because they're beach towns and people would rather be there in the summer! I love Lake Michigan any time. We got a house for two families across the street from Lake Michigan, close to Pathfinder School. We could walk across the street and 1/4 mile down the road to the beach, and easily drive to Traverse City. It was a busy road, but good location.

Restaurants

We went to 7 Monks Taproom to watch the MSU basketball game, and it was great. Busy but not too busy, wonderful food. We tried to watch the Lions game that night at a few different places, but they were packed, so we ended up at North Peak Brewing Company, which we also liked. (Bonus - we could get in there!) On New Year's Eve morning, Kris contacted a couple of restaurants and asked if we could have a reservation for 22 people. Amazingly, West End Tavern, which is right on the water, and about a mile from our Airbnb...said YES! It wasn't even a crazy expensive place, and we had our own room! That was wonderful. It turned out Kate had friends in common with our server, and he even remembered going to her parents' house...anyway, it was a nice place, and I'm glad they had room for us.

Things to Do

We hiked one of my favorite Michigan hikes - Empire Bluffs Trail. It's just a little 1.5 mile walk, and it has a huge payoff. You're high above the water, you're on a cliff, and you can see the shoreline which reminds me of Hawaii. Our family and the Uptons went, and the boys entertained us by doing backflips, front flips, and box jumps. They always make hikes even more exciting! I've been on this hike twice, and I asked the boys if they remembered it, and they didn't. I looked it up and I took them 10 years ago, when the twins were 6 and Max was 3. Of course they didn't remember it! We've been on a million hikes since then.

Downtown Traverse City - We walked around the downtown and visited Wilson's Antique Downtown, which is a four-story antique store! I'm not even really into antiques, and I still loved it. We walked around to other shops around there, and then down to the beach and out on the pier. A lovely walk and town.

Cherry Drop - This was one of my favorite moments of the weekend. It had just started to snow an hour or two earlier, so there were beautiful snowflakes drifting down. We parked along the street a few blocks away and all located each other in front of the stage. The lit up cherry was high above the street. There was a DJ playing music, and everyone danced and slid around in the snow. There was no food, no drink, just dancing, singing, and waiting until midnight. People on the second story along the street, all dressed up at parties in sequined dresses waved at us. It was the same atmosphere as before a race - everyone in a good mood and having fun! We counted down the cherry as it dropped and celebrated at midnight.

Lake Michigan - Since Lake Michigan was right across the road, I went to it in the morning, afternoon, and night! The colors were so great, as usual. Then, on New Year's Day morning, as is our tradition, we did a polar plunge. For this one, we drove to Gage's hotel - Sugar Beach Resort Hotel, because it had a hot tub! Right from his room, we ran down to the lake across the sand, plunged in, and then scampered off to the hot tub. It's such a fun way to kick off the year! This year wasn't even that cold - some years it's been windy and frigid.

Where will we kick of 2025? We have time to plan!

Summer in Michigan

I love summer in Michigan. Not only did I go to Lake Michigan an unprecedented five weekends in a row, but there are so many other great places! There's so much to see and do in my little state. This summer I hit up:

Saugatuck

My favorite beach used to be Oval Beach. It was always white sand, empty, beautiful. It cost $10 dollars to park there, and I felt like that cut down on the crowds. Well, no longer! We came here twice this summer and it was super packed the first time, and even more packed the second time. Both weekdays!

This is what I love about Oval Beach - you can park right in between giant dunes and the beach, and you can easily go back to your car anytime you want, so you're not walking a mile to get sunscreen or food.

We also climbed up Mount Baldhead, which is a series of many steps that leads to an outlook. Always a good time. We always also eat at Dairy Daze, where they give you giant - I'm not joking, giant - portions of ice cream.

Luther, Pine River & Silver Creek State Forest Campground

We did something new this year, and we joined our friends in a big group on their annual canoe trip. They've been going for 20-some years, and so they had everything planned so perfectly! They camp at Silver State campground. They rent from a place they like, and they know just how to figure the cars so that there are the right amount at the end of the 7-hour trip!

Along the way we saw cliffs, we climbed a giant dune, and we enjoyed the company of our friends. This was canoeing, different than kayaking for me, because it's so much less stable. It also was a more challenging river than just floating. It was awesome.

Old Mission Peninsula

We visited Kris' cousin Melissa and her husband Tom, and they have the good sense to live in Traverse City on Old Mission Peninsula, right on Lake Michigan. In fact, the road between their house and the lake is closed right now, because part of it is crumbling into the lake. It made it even nicer for walking and running, though obviously the residents aren't thrilled - not the ones that live in the middle of it, anyway.

We walked up to a high point and could see vineyards all around us. There's just something about the ordered rows of a vineyard that I find incredibly beautiful.

Tom and Melissa took us on their boat across the lake to Elk Rapids, where we ate lunch. We spent the rest of the time kayaking and paddleboarding and hanging out by the water. Nice area to visit!

South Haven

Right when we got to South Haven, we went to South Beach and were delighted with how empty it was! We noticed a lot of police, looked it up, and saw that a guy had just shot two people on the pier and then himself. South Beach is NOT like this, but then the next morning we got the paper at our Airbnb and it talked about a shooting at a party. I went to run and Kris was like ... be careful. But it was not like that at all ... just another nice beach town, but sad events, for sure.

We went here with Kris' family for a vacation weekend all together! Since it was Kris' sister, her husband, their two kids, and Kris' parents, plus us five, we got an Airbnb house that was a mile from the beach. It was fantastic. It was at 914 Phoenix Street, and not only was it giant, with a great backyard, she also had TOYS for us. A beach tent, bodyboards, bikes, scooters, wagon, beach toys - it was amazing.

We loved the farmers market on Saturday morning, running to the pier, checking out the downtown shops, eating ice cream, and going to Two Blondes for lunch. I loved South Beach and North Beach - North Beach had amazing, wild waves one day, while South Beach remained relatively calm. There was paid parking on the beach - $10 for the day, so it was easy to get to if you're not staying over, too.

One funny thing was the drawbridge. It kept not working. Once we waiting in our Jeep for a long time before deciding to turn and find another route, but one time we were on bikes waiting. We eventually just crossed!

Kris' parents went back for their anniversary two weeks later, so they liked it too! It surpassed Oval Beach as our favorite, but it's just a liiiiiitle farther from home.

Berrien Springs

Kris and I took the boys camping at Shamrock Park when they were not-one and three. Of course, they didn't remember it. This time we went without Kris, because of harvest.

We camped right along the river. Spots 74-79 seem like the best ones. We bought bait at a sketchy store right outside the campground, we fished, we waded in the water, and then we decided to go to Lake Michigan, you know, since we all love it. It was just a 12-mile drive straight west from the campground. We got there and saw it was called Weko Beach, and it was attached to a campground. You have to pay to get it, but the attendant just waved us in because it was 5:00 p.m.

Don't go to Weko Beach. There were dogs running around, and their owners weren't doing anything to control them. We saw a German Shepherd go after a dog that was walking by, and then when we walked by, the dog started chasing Max and barking like crazy. I ran in between them and yelled at him to go away in my meanest voice. The owners did nothing. Nothing. Max ran into the water to get away from the dog and it followed him into the water and bit him! I said, "RUN!" and we four sprinted away down the beach away from that dog and those terrible people. It broke his skin, but not his bathing suit, so I knew there was no dog bacteria in him, but that's not a fun vacation activity.

We got ice cream afterward at Scoops. Max didn't cry or scream and basically acted like he gets bitten by dogs every day. The ice cream helped me, anyway.

Our tent was inexplicably under a mercury light. We tried very hard to light a fire, but since the fire pit was open underneath, we couldn't do it. We went out to the river after dark and shone the flashlight into the river to see lots of creatures. The next morning Cole blocked the bottom of the pit and built a beautiful fire at 5:00 a.m., despite me shushing him.

We went to Warren Dunes State Park and climbed up the giant dune, and we went to the beach for a few minutes, then hit Western Michigan University on the way home to show my kids where I went for undergrad.

St Joseph

Our friends Erin and Jay live in St Joseph on Lake Michigan, and we try to visit them every year. I've lost count of how many times we've been there. We've done a lot of things in St Joseph, but this year we did some new things! For one, their yacht club had a huge party with a live band after a regatta race. There were so many people there, and it was super fun.

The next day Jay took us to a hike at Grand Mere. I loved the hike. It went through pavement, then woods, then mud, then dunes, then to Lake Michigan! The beach had really steep dunes, and it was beautiful. Then Jay drove us to Three Oak, another new town, and we went to Journeyman Distillery, which is a restaurant in an old stay factory. While you waited for your table, they had an 18-hole putting green! This delighted me, as I've never seen that, and it was so fun to play. Hopefully this will become a commonality at restaurants.

Mackinac Island

I went to Mackinac Island for a conference, so I despite the countless times I've been here, I did all new things! We stayed at the Grand Hotel (this for sure never would have happened), to social events on the porch, to yoga, and on a behind-the-scenes tour.

For the first time in my life, I rode in a horse and carriage. We went to the Woods, the back nine of the golf course at the Grand. It was a scramble, and Kris and I had amazing partners. I also made two birdie putts, with one of them being a 30-footer, so they were fooled into thinking I was good, too!

All in all, it was a wonderful summer in Michigan. If you ever have any questions about a location, please don't hesitate to contact me!
